Since 2006, Green Carnival has been SAVE’s annual flagship project. It is a platform to raise environmental awareness and mobilize the NUS community to translate that awareness into action for the environment. Green Carnival is strongly and widely supported by NUS administration, Students’ Union and governmental bodies such as National Environment Agency (NEA) and South West CDC.

2008 – NUS Fights Climate Change
A total of five student-initiated projects was launched and extended as part of the broader NUS Fights Climate Change initiative. These permanent, sustainable, university-wide projects are Zer0waste, 1Degree, Rebate2Earth, SAVE3s and Food4Thought. On top of these, the university, represented then by the Campus Sustainability Committee (CSC), launched a Sustainable Office Programme for the NUS administrative offices and academic departments. Through these projects, NUS signalled its commitment to fight climate change, which was an unprecedented initiative among the tertiary institutions then.

2009 – NUS Fights Climate Change – What About You?
In 2009, the theme of “NUS Fights Climate Change – What About You?” encapsulates our belief that it would take the concerted effort of every member in the NUS community to achieve an impact in mitigating climate change. For the first time, SAVE involved the NUS population in evaluating and ultimately implementing environmental initiatives through a month-long campaign named “NUS Votes For Earth!” before the official launch of Green Carnival 2009.
The overarching aim of this campus-wide initiative is to create an unprecedented paradigm shift towards environmental sustainability in the identified aspects of campus life, with the objectives to:
(i) Raise awareness on the severity and urgency of global climate change and relate climate change to the daily activities of Singaporeans
(ii) Engage and solicit feedback and support for identified environmental programmes through an interactive online medium to increase participation
(iii) Demonstrate how individuals in NUS can play a part in mitigating climate change and nurture environmentally friendly habits that promote a sustainable lifestyle in modern city living
(iv) Empower, inspire and motivate individuals to spearhead environmental initiatives in NUS
In order to achieve a mind-set change, a concerted and inclusive effort by the campus community is necessary to mitigate mankind’s environmental impacts. Such a change is needed to address the perpetual gap between the espoused aims of environmental programmes and their implementation.

2010 – NUS Fights Climate Change – Now or Never!
NUS Green Carnival 2010 saw the renewal of the NUS Fights Climate Change (NFCC) campaign to “NUS Fights Climate Change – NOW or Never”; a reflection of SAVE’s resolve to instil a sense of urgency in the NUS community such that they will be mobilised to act immediately given the severity and impending irreversibility of climate change (after the dismal conclusion of COP15 which encapsulates the current critical climate situation).
All the projects for AY 2010/2011 (and three years on) will be structured in line with the theme. The key deliverables for this academic year are:
(i) To instil a sense of urgency on the reduction of carbon footprint by involving one out of every two NUS staff and students in the Green Carnival activities.
(ii) To motivate at least 200 NUS staff and students to volunteer and/or lead their own green projects after Green Carnival.
