Want to save the earth? It’s easy as 0,1,2,3,4 !!!
0 Waste:
Project Zer0Waste aims to improve the overall recycling infrastructure and promote recycling and waste minimization efforts within NUS. Contamination rate of current recycling bins has drastically decreased since introduction labels were put up. Zer0Waste intends to study the trash bins in order to obtain a clearer picture on the percentage of recyclables being recycled. The NUS community is welcomed to feedback on the recycling infrastructure and points, or report any defects of bins.
Zer0Waste invites the NUS community to join us in our (charitable) recycling efforts.
1 Degree Up:
The objective of the 1DegreeUp committee is to promote energy conservation and the reduction of energy consumption. The setting of all thermostats to 25ºC has successfully reduced energy consumption and realized sizable energy savings for NUS. This year, 1Degree Up is looking at collaborating with Office of Environmental Sustainability (OES) to carry out an Energy Audit on campus. The committee also aims to create a realistic program for saving energy for hostel residents staying on campus.
The 1DegreeUp committee invites all from NUS to join us in every year’s Earth Hour as part of the global campaign for better energy practices.
Rebate 2 Earth:
Rebate2Earth started off as a 10 cents tax for each plastic bag taken from NUS CO-OP Bookstores and the canteens’ fruits and drinks stall. The project had managed to reduce plastic bag consumption by more than 90% in CO-OP bookstores and is strongly supported by OES and Office of Estate and Development (OED). The ideology behind Rebate2Earth is to reduce excessive consumption.
Two year after the implementation of the tax and one year after the implementation of Project Box, the Rebate2Earth team is now targeting to further reduce the consumption of plastic bags used for taking away food in NUS canteens as well as in Prince George Park Residences (PGPR).
Save 3s:
Save3s started from implementing default double-sided printing to minimize excessive and unnecessary paper usage on campus, to launching Campus in a Tropical Rainforest (CiTR), whose objective is in preserving and expanding green areas on campus. Trees are important carbon sinks in the current climate situation. With the aim to inspire awareness and concern about the state of the environment and the importance of conservation among the NUS community, Save3s invites you to join us in our tree planting and nature guiding events.
Food 4 Thought:
Food4thought aims to raise awareness about the link between our dietary choices and its impacts on the environment. Seeing that livestock contribute to global warming, it is timely to educate the masses on the dietary options and alternatives which can reduce some of our carbon footprint. Besides encouraging reduction in meat consumption, Food4thought will also explore the possibility of reducing food waste and providing organic food options in NUS.
