Save3s is a committee under NUSSU SAVE with the Mission to promote a harmonious and sustainable relationship between Man and Nature. Our main aim is to promote holistic awareness about nature conservation and inspire love for the environment. We do this by organizing a wide variety of projects; thereby providing individuals like you, an opportunity to contribute to saving the environment.
Current Projects
Our flagship programme “Campus in a Tropical Rainforest” (CiTR) was received with great enthusiasm last year. This project currently involves two projects, “Plant-A-Tree” and “Greening of PGPR”. The inaugural tree planting ceremony for “Plant-A-Tree” was held on 10th October 2010 and saw the planting of 31 trees by over 60 participants at Clementi Woods. CiTR expects to hold tree planting events at least twice a year. The motive behind “Greening of PGPR” was to introduce the concept of growing trellises to provide shade and reduce the temperature, especially since PGPR has been identified as one of the hottest places in NUS.
Save3s members also volunteer as nature guides. We have collaborated with National Geographic to provide guided tours for primary and secondary school students to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. During the guided tour, students are exposed to the serene and beautiful surroundings. It is an excellent opportunity for them to get in touch with their inner self amidst a wide variety of flora and fauna. To make this whole exercise a true learning experience, the students are asked to capture nature at its best and select one of their photos and do a short write-up for submission to the Green Carpet Award. Through this simple and fun task, we hope to ignite in the students a passion for the environment and nature conservation, making what they learn in the classroom come alive.
Past Projects
It is due to our perseverance that as of AY 2009-10, Semester 2, NUS has set a common standard across all modules for assignments to be submitted electronically or on double-sided print. All printers in NUS libraries and computer clusters have also been set to default double-sided printing. Not only does this help reduce the amount of trees being cut down by saving paper, but it is also economically effective. Informational stickers are provided at computer monitors for those who still want to print single-sided. This gesture goes a long way in creating awareness and making both the students and teachers realize how they too, can contribute to saving trees in a simple, yet effective manner.
Save3s members also get to show off their artistic side by making craft paper from used papers such as newspapers and magazines. The paper made can then be used to make cards, bookmarks and decorative items. Now that’s called saving paper in style!! Look out for our workshop to make recycled craft paper.
All our projects have one common message – “Save the Trees”. Everyone talks about saving trees, but not many get as much as even close to us in making this seemingly daunting task enjoyable. We believe in saving trees, and having fun while at it. So if you guys are interested in having some fun and making a difference, join us in our activities.
