1 Degree Up
1 Degree Up’s main objective is to promote energy conservation and the reduction of energy consumption.
The name “1 Degree Up” has dual meaning. It suggests the tremendous amount of energy that we could save if all of us were to raise the temperature of our air-conditioner by 1 degree Celsius. It also implies that with each 1 degree Celsius rise in average global temperature, there would be strong devastating effect on global ecosystems and biodiversity.
Launched on 22 October 2007 in Green Carnival 2007 by Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary of MEWR, and Mr Joseph Mullinix, NUS Deputy President (Administration), the setting of all thermostats to 25°C has successfully reduced energy consumption and realized sizable energy savings in NUS.
We acknowledge that more needs to be done in the area of compliance. As such, we will be working with the Office of Estate and Development to set up a feedback channel so that the 25°C policy can be effectively enforced. However, there are places where this policy cannot be implemented. NUS libraries, for instance, have to maintain a certain temperature and humidity so that the lifespan of the books, film and magnetic-based collections can be increased.
