Green Carnival 2008 (25th – 27th August 2008)
Green Carnival 2008 is jointly organised by NUSSU SAVE and NUS Campus Sustainability Committee. First held in 2006, Green Carnival (GC) serves as a platform for environmental movement in the university. This year, Green Carnival brought the students, administration and the academia together in an effort to mobilize the entire community towards environmental sustainability
With the theme of “NUS Fights Climate Change”, GC 08 was an avenue for the university to underline its commitment to fight climate change. In the opening ceremony, 6 sustainable, university-wide environmental projects were either launched or extended under the broad initiative ‘NUS Fights Climate Change’. They are ‘Zer0waste’, ‘1 Degree Up’, ‘Rebate2Earth’, ‘Save3s’, ‘Food4Thought’ and ‘Sustainable Office Programme’.
The opening ceremony was graced by Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, and Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS Acting President. Other VIPs include Mr Lee Yuen Hee, CEO of National Environment Agency, Mr Joseph Mullinix, NUS Deputy President (Administration), Prof Tan Thiam Soon and NUS Vice Provost (Education).
Green Carnival 2008 was held from 25th to 27th August 2008. The 3-day event was marked by a climate change exhibition at NUS Central Forum, where all students and staff are invited to visit. Highlights in the exhibition include detailed write-ups on each of the projects. There were screenings of video documentaries and simulated set-ups of an eco-office and a disaster area to increase realism. Over the 3 days, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people viewed the exhibition.
Green Carnival 2008 was generously sponsored by National Environment Agency, City Developments Limited, Nokia and Sembawang Shipyard Pte Ltd, and was supported by Philips, NUS Co-op, NUS Museum and NUSSU Video and Photography Committee.
